Permit.io Comics
Working with Permit.io is a fun challenge: their product is a developer tool meant to make authorization easy. Pitching it to their audience, however, is hard.
Programmers are a tough crowd that recognizes marketing schticks from miles away.
So how do you win them over? With genuine, relatable, eye-level comics, of course.
These comic strips are a part of the Permit.io Substack, a fun bonus for the subscribers. They are also posted on Reddit, where they have gained thousands of upvotes on millions of views.
Crafting these takes teamwork: the Permit.io marketing team comes up with a brief, and then we try to crack it together and find the clearest, funniest visuals to tell the story.
Sometimes there's a clear instruction about what the reader sees, and sometimes it's more of a feeling or an idea. As a visual storyteller, my job is to find a way to show that idea with minimal words, using meme formats, cultural references, and facial expressions.
For this ongoing project, I created a silly, dynamic, slightly unhinged style, aesthetically pleasing yet personal.
I also had the pleasure of joining the Permit.io booth at the DevWorld conference in Amsterdam and making portraits of the attendees. While sitting down for a portrait, we chatted about their work and the ups and downs of a tech career. Each portrait took about 10 minutes, and the attendees were given a printed copy of the painting.
I got to meet and draw so many interesting people, and to combine two of the things I love doing the most - drawing and talking with fellow nerds!
